A charity concert organized by the Metropolinate of Piraeus of the Church of Greece, was held in the presence of a vast concourse of people. Considerable funds were raised, which will be used to help those suffering from the economic crisis, reports AgionOros.
Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus spoke at the event:
“We are living in the time that is tragic for our country. The reason for the catastrophe was not natural calamities, but the avarice and deliberate plan of the global government. But Greece has survived much more severe trials, always overcoming them with faith in Christ and the immortal ideals of our nation. It was the Orthodox Church that served as the ark of salvation for Greeks”.
Speaking of the Church’s charitable duty, Metropolitan Seraphim said:
“The Church is not a ministry for social protection. Its objective and goal is the Kingdom of Heaven; that is why it inspires people to overcome themselves. Under the present-day conditions, when the state is ineffectual and ignored by all, the Church has taken its duties upon Itself. We do not have many opportunities, but with boundless love and confidence in God we are carrying out our ministry. If necessary, we are even ready to sell our church chandeliers and icon lamps of our temples in order to help the needy”.
