America’s largest Christian cross is set to be built in Texas – in Corpus Christi, the city with the name that means “Body of Christ.”
The Corpus Christi Cross Project kicked off with a groundbreaking at the Abundant Life Fellowship campus off Interstate 37. And the church pastor, Rick Milby, said it will be the largest cross of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, ultimately reaching 210 feet into the sky and 95 feet wide, Newser reported.
Milby said he got the idea for the cross after he saw a massive cross in Houston and learned about “lives that were changed, suicides that were aborted, relationships that were restored because of the influence of the cross,” he wrote on the project’s website.
The Corpus Christi cross is so big it allows for “a two-foot deflection at the top – it will actually sway in the wind two feet back and forth,” Mulby said to KRIS TV.
He also said winds aren’t likely to bring the cross down because it will be rooted in a concrete foundation that goes 48 feet deep.
“If it were to blow over,” he said, USA Today reported, “it would pull up about three acres of land with it.”
The cross will be able to be seen five miles away.
It will likely be finished by the end of this year.
The world’s tallest cross is in Madrid and stands 495 feet high.
