A Christmas star, a copy of the Bethlehem star that showed the Magi the way to the Christ Child, was lit up on December 26 in the main bell tower of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Simferopol, the press service of the local diocese reports.

The star weighs 15 kg and its size is 1.9 meter by 1.9 meter. Halogen lamps are fixed inside and the light spreads for 400 meters.

"Residents of Crimea will be able to enjoy the mild light of the Christmas star shining from the highest bell tower of St. Alexander Cathedral till the feast of Theophany on January 19," diocesan officials said.

Such decoration has appeared in Crimea for the first time. President of the Kievskaya Rus charitable foundation Yevgeny Tivon brought the Christmas symbol from Hamburg, Germany.

For the first time, the star appeared in the bell tower of the Kiev Caves Lavra in 2014, then it shone from the bell tower of the memorial church of All Saints in Minsk, and now it decorates the cathedral in Simferopol.

In March 2016 organizers of the decoration will present the star to the St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow.
