Administrative buildings resembling Russian Orthodox Churches constructed in China

Beijing, December 26, 2013

Officials of the Mentougou district of Beijing have constructed for themselves administrative buildings, which outwardly resemble Russian Orthodox Churches.

This fact can provoke astonishment only outside China: mass reproduction of architectural attractions began in the country long ago. Not only individual monuments, but also whole cities are replicated.

Civil servants from the bureau of seismology, the water resources, the forestry, and the meteorological service expressed their wish to work in the "Russian" offices, stylized as cathedrals of the Kremlin. The complex, consisting of four buildings, will be completed early in 2014. The official’s motivation is unknown, but their penchant for the exotic may later backfire on them: an active struggle with groundless expenditures of budgetary funds began in China, and as part of it a moratorium on construction of new administrative buildings and repair of old ones was imposed.
