Children's top model contest opposed in Tyumen

Tyumen, August 19, 2013

Public organizations in the Russian city of Tyumen have addressed the governor of the Tyumen region and the children's ombudsman of the region with the request to make assessment of compliance of the "children's top model contest" project that was opened in the city on Monday with the federal law on Basic Guarantees of the Rights of the Child in the Russian Federation, reports Interfax-Religion.

The appeal was signed by the Tyumen city parents' committee, the regional department of the "In defense of Orthodox morality" movement, the foundation for national traditions support, "Father's House", the regional department of the "For life and in defense of family values" organization.

The representatives of the public feel certain that participation in the children's beauty contest "can cause damage to the physical, mental, spiritual, and moral development of children".

"Girls are forced to grow up faster and to take on the patterns of behavior and skills of an adult woman. Instead of teaching chastity and gentleness, they are on the contrary forced to emulate vulgar women," noted the appeal.

The public organizations are seeking to assure that there will be no such contests in the future on both the regional and national levels.
