Famagusta, Cyprus, August 8, 2012

An historic monument of the Middle Ages, the holy temple of Saint George, is being used as a public toilet and fallen into complete ruin, it was reported. The church is located in Famagusta, an eastern city in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, and, according to the Havantis newspaper, is now a desolated building.

The report noted that there are several historic monuments partially or totally destroyed, losing their value as tourist attractions and that officials have abandoned preservation efforts. During the night, according to the newspaper, drunk people consume great amounts of alcohol inside the church, leave garbage behind and urinate everywhere. Havantis added that the churches of St. Symeon and St. Nikolaos share the same fate.
