Russian Church to open asylum for homeless

Moscow, December 14, 2010

The Russian Orthodox Church plans to open an asylum for homeless people to stay during the day.

The corresponding project was worked out in the synodal Department for Church Charities and Social Work.

"It is planned to open a sanitary inspection room, places to stay for the night, a hospital for 20 beds and a department for treatment during the day. The asylum will give us a chance to save lives of many people who die in Moscow streets," the synodal department head for work with homeless people Ilya Kuskov told Interfax-Religion.

According to him, there are over 10 thousand homeless people in Moscow and only six city asylums that are able to accept about 1500 people. These asylums are open mostly for those homeless people, who were earlier registered as residents of Moscow and the Moscow Region.
